When people first hear about Distance Reiki for animals, one of the most common questions is . . .“How can Reiki possibly work if you’re not physically with my animal?”
It’s a fair question—and a beautiful opportunity to understand just how deeply connected we all truly are. In Japanese Reiki lineages, this is often referred to as “connection healing”. This is because the Japanese spiritual teaching is that physical distance is only a surface human perception.
In Distance Reiki, we focus inward and connect to the deepest core of our spiritual selves. We realize that we are all One and that there is only distance on the physical plane of our reality.
What Is Distance Reiki?
Distance Reiki is simply the offering of Reiki energy across time and space. In the Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki, this is done with deep respect for the animal’s autonomy, comfort, and natural wisdom.
Rather than directing or “sending” energy to fix something, we create a calm, peaceful space and invite the animal to engage with the Reiki energy in whatever way feels right to them.
There is no pressure.
No expectation.
No agenda.
The animal leads the session.
How the Let Animals Lead® Approach Is Different
In traditional Reiki practices, the practitioner may focus on specific areas of concern or guide the energy with intention. In the Let Animals Lead® method, we take a step back.
We become a quiet, compassionate presence.
We hold space.
We listen.
Animals are incredibly intuitive and energetically aware. When given the choice, they naturally take what they need—and only what they need—from the Reiki energy. Some may connect deeply and rest. Others may come and go. Some may simply acknowledge the energy in subtle ways.
Every experience is perfect for that individual animal.
How Distance Reiki Works Energetically
Reiki is not limited by physical distance. It exists within a field of universal life energy that connects all living beings.
Think of it like this:Just as we can feel love, concern, or connection with someone who is far away, Reiki flows through that same energetic connection.
During a distance session, I connect with your animal energetically, with your permission, and offer a calm, grounded Reiki space. Your animal can then choose how—and if—they wish to engage.
What Happens During a Session?
Each session is unique, but generally:
I begin by creating a quiet, grounded Reiki space
I gently connect with your animal energetically
I allow the session to unfold without directing or controlling the energy
I observe any impressions, shifts, or communication that may arise
After the session, I will share what I experienced with you
Your animal does not need to be still, quiet, or even aware in a conscious way. They may be resting, playing, or going about their normal routine.
The connection happens on an energetic level.
What Can Distance Reiki Help With?
While Reiki is not a replacement for veterinary care, it can be a beautiful complementary support for:
Stress and anxiety
Behavioral challenges
Emotional healing
Recovery from illness or injury
End-of-life comfort and transition
Deepening the bond between you and your animal
By using the Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki, your animal is always in control of the experience. They may choose to relax deeply, move around, rest in another room, or go about their normal routine. Every response is honored.
Each session supports your animal exactly where they are. Often, clients notice subtle but meaningful shifts in their animal such as deeper relaxation, improved mood, or a greater sense of ease. Sometimes the shifts are subtle, and sometimes they are profound.
There is nothing your animal needs to do—and nothing you need to prepare beyond allowing them to simply be themselves.
Trusting the Process
One of the most important aspects of Distance Reiki is trust.
Trusting your animal.Trusting the energy.Trusting that what unfolds is exactly what is needed.
Animals do not overthink or resist in the way humans sometimes do. They meet energy honestly and respond authentically. That is why this method is so profound.
A Gentle Invitation
If you feel drawn to explore Distance Reiki for your animal, you are already sensing the connection that makes this work possible.
You don’t have to fully understand how it works.
You only need to be open.
Your animal will do the rest.
There is also a blog post containing the findings of a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial study that was conducted on the impact of Distance Reiki. This six-week study was conducted by a holistic veterinarian, Claudia Ruga Barbieri, DVM, MS, MBA during 2024. In summary, after their sixth session, all dogs in the Reiki group showed a moderate or excellent improvement in pain by 70%. You can read the study in its entirety here
